If you’re in London over the summer months Feel Flows is currently on exhibition at 99 Bishopsgate until 26 September. 5&20 is a group exhibition exploring contemporary craft, co-curated by Brookfield Properties and the Crafts Council. The exhibition celebrates their ongoing collaboration in support of the Crafts.
Feel Flows was acquired for the Crafts Council Collection in 1996 from Material Evidence-Improvisations on a Historical Theme, my solo exhibition at The Whitworth Art Galley in Manchester. There were six major works all of which referenced the Whitworths reserve collection of historical lace. The exhibition was curated by Dr Jennifer Harris, part of our shared agenda was to inspire others to see the potential power and creative wealth to be found in the applied arts of the past. Interestingly many years later, Feel Flows was shown at Collect, Ralph Rugoff commented that “Collect offers us a chance to look at some of the most innovative and vital work in an eclectic range of media. Contemporary craft and visual arts are a bit like parallel universes that are occasionally joined by unpredictable worm-holes. On the surface, they can sometimes appear to have more in common than not, but ultimately work in each field looks back to, and references, different traditions and systems of meaning and value. That said, there also seems to be a good deal of contemporary craft that takes on some of the conceptual rhetoric of contemporary art while maintaining a deep concern with questions related to histories of technique and material use.” He also commented that “I think ‘Feel Flows’ combines elements of sculpture and painting in an interesting way, taking an innovative approach to the depiction of spatial relationships by pressing coloured fabric into the cut-out shapes of the painted ground. I was also struck by the sense that its all-over composition seems like a detail of a larger field, as if the work continued beyond the borders of its frame.” Feel Flows is undoubtably a high point of my Lace with attitude phase.

I'm always interested in a workshop structure that extends both ideas and techniques. The Point of a Needle is at West Dean from 18-22 August. @westdeancollege The central focus of this workshop is on the tool that creates the mark/stitch. Needles, like brushes, come in a wide variety of shapes, weights and lengths. Each has its own specific set of handling qualities designed to facilitate certain tasks. It is important to question the inter-relatability between the needle, thread and gesture deployed to create a visual mark. Each one exerts its own influence. If you are interested in working with thread, your choice of needle is at the sharp end of any deliberation as to how to proceed.

At the onset of the workshop, you will be given a collection of needles which will include long, curved, split, upholstery and basketry in a variety of thicknesses and lengths. You will also be provided with a raised floating frame, which facilitates a more expressive and gestural interaction with the ground, as it allows for a greater degree of physical interaction and movement both above and below the surface of the cloth/ground you choose to work into.

The course will begin with a series of demonstrations that outline the technical parameters of the equipment you will be working with. This will be followed by selected visual references to add context to the nature of your experimentation, imagery that relates in feel, concept and aspiration. This is not a stitch workshop per se but an opportunity to either experiment in a freeform gestural way or reference/extend traditional stitch structures. I have been asked to present a reflective overview of my practice, a textile travelogue, of interrelated ideas, encompassing, exhibition, commission, curatorial, research, architectural and educational outcomes. Textile culture, specifically embroidery, which I began to study in 1969 continues to exert a huge influence, it has literally shaped my life. I believe the most innovative work emanates from a synthesis of historical and contemporary sources. My works recognize no hierarchy in approach or discipline; my visual language is a synthesis of craft, painterly, design and sculptural traditions. Photo - Joe Low

A select group of my Storyboard series is currently on exhibition in Geneva @tastecontemporary 'Follow and Respond' also features the work of Oriel Zinaburg.
The Storyboards began to evolve in early 2020, the first image to be completed was this work, Gulliver. There’s a clear reference to the pursuit of other worlds to inhabit and create (a primal fascination) and feelings of entrapment (care of the pandemic). The work was referenced in a post by Taste Contemporary recently, it’s not included in the exhibition, but its influence looms large, as did Gulliver in Lilliput.
