Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital
Mr Sandman 2004
Containing natural coloured sand (some of which was collected from Aberdeen beach), Mr Sandman was inspired by the idea of waiting and the passing of time – the hourglass or egg timer – and is intended to be fun, meditative and calming for both children and adults alike. A series of revolving and static circular chambers have been set into the wall containing a series of curious, quirky found objects which children can easily recognise. When the chambers slowly revolve in sequence the sand flows over the objects, covering and uncovering them in unexpected and random sequences.
Waiting is an integral part of hospital life; Mr Sandman was designed to provide a literal, positive spin, on that experience.
