In many ways, the work can also be read as a derivation of a form of moral board game Virtue Rewarded, Vice Punished popular in the early 19th Century. Conceptually the work makes reference to various associative aspects of warfare, strategies, war games, the lottery of survival, the keyboard trench, gun batteries, entanglement and the memory of conflict via the utilization of floral tributes.
